RHYTHM OF YULOH is Chen Duxi’s new monograph collecting recent artworks and spatial projects. Titled after the traditional sound of the yuloh—an oar used in Chinese sculling—the book reflects Chen’s origin in the water-rich region of Sichuan and her sustained engagement with Chinese traditions across art, philosophy, and music.
In the Chiyi and Ergong series, Chen moves from water as metaphor to a philosophy of line. Through variations of line density and color gradation she probes the continuity of time, the fluidity of nature and life, and the subtle dynamics between observer and observed. Her work conflates body, nature, and space into a field of endless possibility, infusing the pictorial surface with an uncommon dynamic tension. Ergong celebrates the plurality of being and the body-as-language, while Chiyi turns inward toward meditative condensation and a quest for unity. Together they form a complementary yin–yang relationship—Ergong expanding outward to embrace the world’s possibilities, Chiyi contracting inward to investigate the essence and order of subjective experience. The dualities of restraint and exuberance, micro and macro, opposition and synthesis continually transform and balance in Chen’s practice, shaping a coherent and profound philosophical framework.
This book presents Chen Duxi’s systematic aesthetic paradigm grounded in an Eastern sense of poetic realm. It documents her reflections on life, investigations into fundamental patterns, and the ways she maps cognitive structures onto image and space—rendering those inquiries onto the page for readers and viewers to engage.
Author
Chen Duxi is a contemporary artist born in Chengdu, graduated from the Chengdu Academy of Fine Arts (Sichuan Conservatory) and currently lives and works in Beijing. Representative works include Contemplate series and the Order of Body Series; his spatial practice includes the project Infinite Valley. Chen Duxi explores time, motion and objects through a synthesis of Western oil painting and traditional Chinese ink painting, trying to find some kind of deep dialogue between traditional Chinese art and contemporary art, not just a grafting of formal language.In a cross-cultural context, he has absorbed the nourishment of early paintings from different cultures and has always kept the core of oriental interest in his paintings, which have been recognized by collectors from Europe and the United States. He has held numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, and his work has been featured in Art Net, Artsy, and many other internationally recognized media.
